Crime Reduction

Streetcage Sports is an organisation with a genuine enthusiasm for all sports and are aware of how powerful it can be to tackle community issues.
With over 5 years experience in delivering community sports projects across some of the most socially deprived areas of the North West our results speak for themselves. Our projects seen Streetcage Sports work with over 5000 youths in 2007/2008 and reduce anti-social behavior in areas by up to 37% when an independent report and evaluation was completed.

Streetcage Sports are aware of the difficulties in tackling anti social behavior and youth crime. The problems that face our communities concerning anti social behavior issues are multifaceted, which is why we have integrated community support services into our program when delivering our Streetcage Sports projects aimed at reducing anti-social behavior.

Streetcage Sports use sport as a hook to get young people involved and subsequently chooses specialised agencies to engage with the young people to attempt to have a long term positive affect on their future.

Streetcage Sports understand crime prevention is not the primary motive for sports coaching, however planned and managed carefully with the support of community services can result as a positive by-product. For this reason, Streetcage Sports works closely with Police officers and Community support officers across the North – west.

We are aware of the importance of community buy in to our projects before any programme takes place and that is why we spend a great deal of time meeting with the local community members and developing links. Our qualified coaching staff and co-coordinators work closely with youths and community workers to develop a programme, break down barriers and get to know youths on a personal note. Our managers & co-ordinators also have a hands on approach so they can relate to youths on the street.

Techniques:

Streetcage Sports identifies a venue and a need in the community by seeking to work with the community so that ownership is given to the young people and the community.

We then meet with our project manager to see if we can identify funding by carefully planning & writing our own bids.

Streetcage Sports then plans a carefully constructed program when delivering projects to tackle Anti-Social behavior. Community Consultation: Streetcage Sports will consult the local youth clubs, community leaders, community organisations, local police, anti social behavior teams, PSO’s, local PCT and any other local people who wish to have an insight into the project.

Combined coaching program: Streetcage Sports prides itself in delivering an interactive coaching program that uses the input and feedback of the young people to give a greater sense of ownership when delivering the coaching sessions.

Our biggest project to date began in January 2010, after being awarded £100,000 by Sport relief to start up a community boxing academy across Merseyside. This Academy will be open to 11 – 19 year olds and will be delivered by Liverpool ex World Featherweight Champion Derry Matthews. The project aims to work with over 600 young people and prevent Anti-social behavior by up to 37% in the local area. Through partnership work we hope this crime preventing youth programme will expand across the region in 2011.
