Boxing
In December 2009, Streetcage Sports successfully captured its biggest name yet to join the organisation by going into Partnership with Liverpool ex World Featherweight Champion Derry Matthews to set up a Community Boxing & Fitness Academy that uses the medium of Boxing to deliver non contact activity for youths and adults. Derry Mathews is an English featherweight boxer and former holder of the English Featherweight title. As an amateur he won the 2002 ABA Bantamweight championship. Mathews shot to notice in October 2006 when he defeated Stephen Foster to win the WBU Featherweight title. The win over Foster was good and really announced Mathews as a force on the domestic scene. Derry will now head up the Boxing & Fitness Academy and will be responsible for its development across the region.
After receiving £100,000 from Sport relief in January 2010, Derry now heads up and delivers the Gun, Gang & knife project for 11 – 19 years olds across 6 districts of Merseyside and over seas the development of all 5 of our qualified ABA Coaching staff. Derry co-ordinates and delivers coaching in all 5 of the Community Academies and provide show case events and Master class for potential new clients to come and see what goes on inside. Our showcase events are attended by Housing trusts, Police, Sports development teams, Youth activity providers and many more. On arrival you will receive your very own information pack, which explains how the academy works and how you can have your very own academy in your local area. Streetcage Sports will also continue to apply for grants and funding for 2011 onwards to expand the programme so that as many youths as possible are given the opportunity to take part.
Derry will also head up a new schools programme, which uses the medium of boxing to provide non contact exercise programmes for young people to help get them fit, reduce Obesity and promote Health & well being. There is also an option around Gun, Knife and gang crime and our sessions together with workshops can teach young people the dangers and also show them what else can be done to achieve their goals and dreams just like Derry Matthews himself.
Finally, our Community Boxing & Fitness programmes, provide activity such as Circuit and Boxercise to Adults in community centres, day centres and sports centres across Merseyside. Working closely with local organisations such as the NHS and PCT’s, our team of medical experts from local Universities will devise a programme to keep the community more active whilst enjoying the activity too. Our programmes aim to reduce problems such as Obesity, Cardio vascular disease and mental health issues so common across our city.
Our Gallery page shows a range of photographs of young people engaged in activities throughout the city.
Streetcage Sports CIC now has a number of qualified Boxing Tutors to deliver Boxing Awards across Merseyside and Cheshire. Ex World Champion Derry Mathews and Level 3 ABA Coach Sean Trodden are fully trained to deliver all of the National Awards below including ASDAN course which are the equivalent of a grade B at G.C.S.E level.
